Endurance Awaits Release from the Pack Ice is a representation of a whaling ship outfitted for Antarctic exploration by Earnest Shackleton. In 1913, the ship was lost after being trapped and crushed in the Wedell Sea ice floes. The story is one of hope amid extreme circumstances and alienation. This sculpture was originally exhibited with an accompanying body of paintings, and later with new sculptural elements as a site specific installation.
